Kōnae - My Records Guide
Kōnae – My Records Guide is a vital online resource developed by Citizens Advice Bureau New Zealand (CAB) in response to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care. The goal: to support individuals in accessing their personal records and understanding their rights and pathways to redress.
CAB partnered with Somar Digital to bring this platform to life, choosing us for our expertise in accessible, user-centred design. Together, we created a trusted, easy-to-use website that empowers individuals to reclaim their history with confidence.
We focused on clarity, accessibility, and empathy - providing users with step-by-step guidance, templates, plain language information, and direct access to support services.
Outcome: A secure, inclusive website that supports people to independently navigate the process of requesting personal records and accessing redress.

Baybus Website Overhaul
The Baybus website is a critical public transport resource for the Bay of Plenty region, helping thousands of commuters plan trips, track buses, and receive real-time service updates.
Commissioned by Bay of Plenty Regional Council Toi Moana, Somar Digital was engaged to completely redesign the Baybus site to improve accessibility, usability, and operational efficiency.
We began with comprehensive UX research to understand the needs and habits of Baybus commuters. From there, we delivered a fresh, mobile-friendly interface with streamlined access to timetables, live tracking, and service alerts.
The focus was on creating a website that worked just as well for first-time visitors as it did for regular riders - clear, fast, and intuitive across all devices.
Outcome: A significantly improved user experience and easier site management for staff, resulting in more accurate, timely updates for passengers. The new Baybus website sets a strong benchmark for public transport digital platforms in the region.
Citizens Advice Bureau - A Platform That Supports Kiwis Nationwide
Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is a trusted not-for-profit organisation that ensures people across Aotearoa can access free, reliable advice on their rights, responsibilities, and the services available to them.
CAB engaged Somar Digital to design and build a new public website and a nationwide intranet platform ("Cabnet") used by over 2,600 trained volunteers across more than 80 locations.
One of the biggest challenges was structuring over 40,000 knowledge base articles in a way that was easy to search, understand, and act on - for both the public and the volunteers supporting them.
We kicked off the project with a focused Design Sprint to test assumptions and explore solutions. In just five days, we prototyped and validated key interaction patterns that shaped the direction of the site and intranet build.
Outcomes:
- A fast, intuitive public website with a tone designed to support users who may be navigating complex or stressful situations.
- A new Cabnet platform described by volunteers as “a quantum leap forward” - easier to use, clearer to navigate, and more efficient to report with.
- A carefully managed migration process that brought millions of records across safely and incrementally, without derailing development.
